Spectrum has launched expanded and enriched training for clinical research personnel.

The goal is to raise the bar for the quality of research across Stanford, and to enhance the career growth of our clinical research personnel. Class instructors include faculty and staff with clinical research expertise from across Stanford University.

Included is a Clinical Research Operations certification that recognizes mastery of the specialized skills and knowledge associated with conducting clinical research at Stanford.

Graduates of the certification program must complete 16 core and 4 elective classes, and pass an exam.

  • Gain knowledge related to conducting clinical research in compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Prepare for Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) certifications.
  • Enhance career growth and advancement.


  • Complete 16 core classes and 4 electives, including quizzes for select core classes.
  • Earn a passing score on the certification exam (based on core classes only).
  • Provide proof of current certifications for the Stanford required trainings listed below:
    • 1. CITI Training: Group 7 - IRB BioMed/GCP Research (online).
      2. HIPAA: Protecting Patient Privacy (LawRoom online)
      3. OnCore Clinical Research Management System Training (in person)


  • Begin the program at any time by registering with Stanford STARS.
  • To be eligible for the certification exam, program requirements must be completed within 2 years of registering for the first STARS class.
  • Core classes are offered up to 3 times in a qualifying 2-year period, but you may only receive credit for specific classes one time.


To maintain certification, you must complete 10 credits in 2 years, and pass a re-certification exam.
The 10 credits must be Clinical Research Operations Certification Program classes, of which 3 must be core classes, and the remaining 7 may be core or elective.
You must also be current in the Stanford trainings (CITI and HIPAA.)
